As some of you may remember, my “proper” job until invalided out was teaching English to adults at all levels from total beginner to coaching fluent speakers in presentations & negotiating. At one point I put flyers around the bazaars offering private lessons around here too.
This was about five years ago so you can imagine how surprised I was to receive a call from a woman a few villages along who wanted my services. We hit a slight snag in that I can’t earn money now. I’m on a disability pension so any earnings have to be declared and deducted.. the whole thing isn’t worth the effort. However, I love the barter system which is what I use if people are pleased with the results of my healing. I find baskets of fruit and vegetables anonymously left on my doorstep.
My regular readers will also know that the bane of my life, when speaking French is my Brit accent which is stuck like glue to the extent that everyone to whom I speak immediately responds with “And where are you from?” Grrrrrrrrrrrr
The deal became obvious. I’d teach her English for an hour in exchange for half an hour correcting my pronunciation and a few pennies towards my diesel for expenses.
Happy with that but nervous as a kitten at the thought of having to WURK, I set off on Wednesday evening . Spirit was with me and kicked my bum several times to tell me to have confidence. First an enormous hare galloped across my path, sat on the side of the road and stared at me intently. All good pagans know that the hare is one of the preferred manifestations of the Mother Goddess, so I reacted accordingly, shouting blessings and grinning madly.
Two magpies joined me and flew, swapping sides sometimes, like a military escort. Two for joy! I thanked them too. Things were looking up. Having found the house I was early so parked up around the corner to wait. Two cats, one ginger & one tortoiseshell, came to chat with me. They were very vocal and encouraging.
